What to include in your first message

What to include in your first message

A clear first message helps support respond without back and forth.

Most delays come from a missing detail rather than a hard problem. A first message that answers the obvious follow up questions usually turns a three day exchange into one reply.

The four things we always need

  1. Expected result. What you thought would happen.
  2. Actual result. What happened instead, quoted exactly if there is an error.
  3. Steps to reproduce. The clicks or URL that trigger it.
  4. Environment. Joomla version, PHP version, extension version, browser.

A good example

On Joomla 5.1.2 with PHP 8.2, opening /gallery shows an empty grid. I expected 12 images. The browser console logs "Uncaught TypeError: items is undefined". It worked before I updated the extension to 2.4.0. Screenshot attached.

What to leave out

  • Passwords or license keys in the message body. If we need access we will ask through a secure route.
  • Several unrelated problems in one ticket. Separate tickets stay easier to track.
  • Screenshots of a whole desktop when a crop of the error would be clearer.

If you are not sure which details matter, send what you have. It is always better to open the ticket than to wait until you can describe it perfectly.
